Panthers Open District-Play With a Win

The Lake Providence Panthers hosted the Homer Pelicans in week 6 of the 2011 season to open district play. The the Pelicans are a new addition to District 2-2A coming from the old District 1-2A that consisted of the likes of Evangeline and Calvary Baptist. Homer usually finished 3rd to Evangel and Calvary each year. Two teams from the old District 1 (Homer and Lakeside) joined District 2 as we lost Farmerville to 3A.

Enough with the history of the restructuring of the new districts. The Lake Providence Panthers opened 2011 with a 24-14 District win against a very impressive looking Homer Pelican team.

The atmosphere was truly electric. The new Lake Providence High School Marching band filled the air with spirited tunes to get crowd and team fired up for play. I'm getting the goosebumps again as I write this.

The Panthers won the toss but got off to a slow start. We didn't move the ball very well on the first drive. Thus we had to punt to the Pelicans who were stuffed by the "Blue Steel" defense to give the Panther another shot at moving the ball.

And moving the ball they did. The Panthers marched down the field on the next drive that ended in a 5 yard touchdown pass from Lamar Carraway to sophomore Albert Hogan. That short pass was set up by a 63 yard run by senior running back Nick Knight. Carraway added 2 more points to the board with a two-point conversion run. At the end of the first quarter the Panthers lead 8-0.

Homer answered the Panthers at the 4:00 minute mark in the second quarter with a touchdown run. Unable to convert for 2 points, the Pelicans trailed the Panthers 6-8. The Panthers scored again in the second quarter on a 72 yard run by Lamar Carraway to lead 14-6. The two-point try was no good. This would be the halftime score as the Panther defense continued to shut down the Pelican offense.

The 3rd quarter went back and forth between the two teams, but no scores made it to the board. The 4th quarter got quite interesting. After very tough defensive stand by the Pelicans, the Panthers were force to punt. Lamar Carraway booted a 30 yard punt to the 1 inch yard line to really stuff Homer. The LP defenses pinned its ears back and went after the Pelicans resulting in a safety and a 16-6 cushion for the Panthers.

The Pelicans were forced to kick from around the 5 yard line due to an unsportsmanlike penalty giving the Panthers a short field. Lake Providence took advantage and scored quickly from 39 yards out on a Lamar Carraway sprint. The two point try was good as Carraway hit Jalen Willis for the 2-point pass. 24- 6 Panthers.

Homer was able to get back on the board again with a 1 yard run with 2:41 left in the game that was set up by a very long pass. The two-point conversion run was good and the score was 24-14.

This would be the final score in the game. And the Panthers are 1-0 in district play and 3-3 overall on the season.

Lake Providence will host the Sterlington Panthers on October 14th to continue the quest for a district title.

Allen Named to LHSAA 2011 Academic All-State Girls Track Team

Joslyn Allen not only throws the shot better than any other Louisiana girl in 2A competition, she excels in the classroom as well. Joslyn was named to the Louisiana High School Athletic Association's 2011 Academic All-State Girls Track Team.

Allen was number #1 in the state for the second year in a row. Last year in the discus throw and in the 2A Shot Put competition in 2011. Joslyn also qualified for the state meet in the Discus Throw in 2011 in which she placed 3rd.

Shifting Gears To Basketball

The Panthers enter their 2-2a distict play with a solid 5-11 record. After beating opponents like Tensas (74-62), Sicily Island (42-37), and Choudrant (50-49) in the earlier part of the season and Oak Grove (64-57) and Delhi Charter (60-56) in the annual Sterlington shootout tournament later in the season the Panters look to raise eyebrows entering district. Seniors Jarqual Robertson ( 16.3 ppg, 5 apg, 1.9 spg), Therion Thomas (13.6 ppg, 2.1 bpg, 7 rpg), and Greg Campbell (9.8 ppg, 8 rpg, 34 % ft shooter) have led the Panthers all season long also with contributions from Barkari Newson (Sr.), Jacoby Mckeel (Sr.), Albert Hogan (Fr.), Fred Jackson (Fr.), and Trey Carraway(Jr.). After the new academic rules passed by the Lhsaa the Panthers found thereselves losing two key players, (So.) Jaylin Willis and (Jr.) Jonathan Sanders. Thing seeemed to have been going down hill since then and I became very worried the evening Coach Damien Brown talked with in his office about the rotations and factors that would make the rest of the season pretty tough. The Panthers have not won a game since then and are in trouble of not making the palyoffs this year, But I loved the heart of this team. Please come out to support the Panther as they play Ferriday in their next district showdown.

District Play On Holt

The Panthers started 2-2a district play with a rough 0-4 start. After being stunned on the road at Ferriday (57-49) and losses to Sterlington (89-54), Mangham (65-51), and Farmerville (76-42) the panthers try to gain momentum as they prepare for the second round robbin district play at home versus Ferriday. The game was set for 2-1-11, but had to be postponed due to a strike by Lhsaa officials. Updates will be posted when district play resumes.

Panthers Open District Play With A Win

Despite poor execution on offensive for the majority of the game the Lake Providence Panthers were able to come away from Jonesboro-Hodge with its first win in district play. Both teams came into the game with 2-3 records.

Jonesboro struck first at 9:21 in the first quarter of the game from 21 yards out by capitalizing on an early turnover in Lake Providence territory.

The Panthers got it together on the next offensive possession running 4 plays before scoring on a 63 yard pass from Lamar Carraway to JoNathan Sanders with 7:41 left to play in the first quarter.

The second quarter was all defensive football for both teams. No points were scored in the second period as the Panther defense came alive and caused a couple of fumbles.

After the half an early J-Hodge fumble led to a Lake Providence touchdown as the Panthers put together a 21 yard drive that ended in a two yard Lamar Carraway rushing touchdown. The two-point conversion try was unsuccessful. The score in the game at 10:13 in the third stood at 12-7 (Lake Providence).

Jonesboro-Hodge picked off another Carraway pass at 5:41 in the third quarter and after 4 consecutive running plays, punched it in from 7 yards away to take the lead at 13-12.

Lake Providence turned the ball over on downs on their next possession and went 3 and out on 2 consecutive drives to start the fourth quarter.

Senior safety Jarqual Robertson got a little banged up in the game and had to come out just before the halftime, but returned in the second half with an inspiring KO return. The Panther defense really stepped up its play. We were just more physical and really hit J-Hodge in the mouth late in the game. Robertson came back to finish out the fourth quarter. This kid really showed a huge heart and outstanding senior leadership.

Late the fourth quarter found the Panthers still down in the game and not able to put together any kind of offense. It looked like J-Hodge would try to play a ball control game and run out the clock. Lake Providence came up with big stops forcing a punt with just a little over a minute left to play. With the ball and the last best chance to make something happen, the Lamar Carraway went deep to sophomore WR Shamaad Stewart to score a 1:01 left in the game. That touchdown play went for 66 yards. The two point pass attempt to another sophomore, Jaylon Willis was good. The final score, Lake Providence 20, Jonesboro-Hodge 13.

Lake Providence held J-Hodge to 186 yards of total offense while only gaining 188. The Panthers gained 6 yards on the ground and 182 in the air. Carraway went 10 for 24, 2 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. He also rushed for 5 yards and one touchdown.

Junior WR JoNathan Sanders had 6 catches for 78 yards. Jaylon Willis had 1 catch and a conversion. Sophomore Shamaad Stewart who scored the go-ahead touchdown finished the night with 2 catches for 92 yards and one touchdown.

Justin Willis lead all tacklers with 8 tackles, one for loss, 2 assists and 2 fumble recoveries. Senior DT Greg Campbell and junior LB Tyiris Adams both had 5 tackles and 2 assists. Adams had 1 tackle for loss. Will Williams recovered a fumble and registered a drive-killing sack late in the game. The “Blue Steel” Defense as a unit played a great game.

The Panthers have gotten to 500 with a 3-3 record on the season and 1-0 in District play. We travel to Sterlington next week.
