FOOTBALL 2009: Farmerville, District 2-2A

The local 2A district achieved a rare feat last season with all five teams reaching the postseason.

Unfortunately, Lake Providence and Ferriday had the misfortune of playing 2A teams John Curtis and Evangel, which eventually reached the title game, in the first round. After round one, Farmerville was the only team still alive.

The Farmerville Farmers are the defending champions after a stellar campaign last year.Coach Joe Spatafora led his team to the quarterfinals thanks to an 11-game winning streak. The season was capped off by Farmerville’s first-ever win over Oak Grove and an undefeated district schedule to take the 2-2A crown. The Farmers’ hopes came crashing down, however, with a devastating loss to Calvary Baptist 36-33 in overtime, leaving a large chip on Spatafora and his team’s shoulders during the offseason.

This year Farmerville will open the season against the Cavaliers in with revenge on its mind.Sterlington finished second in the disrict behind Farmerville, another loss full of heartache for the District 2-2A team.Only this time the Panthers were on the losing end of the overtime loss at home in Week 8.

Sterlington found a way to bounce back, however, with an overtime win over Lake Providence the following week.

Despite winning just one game in district, the Panthers of Lake Providence are possibly the most improved over recent years with the new leadership of head coach Sonny Nason.Nason helped the team go from a 17-game losing streak to winning four games in the 2008 season. The Panthers finished 4-7 with a 1-3 record in district, as did Ferriday and Jonesboro-Hodge in district play. The Trojans of Ferriday suffered a rebuilding year after winning the District 2-2A title in 2007.
