Panthers Put On the Pads

The hot humid days of August signal the beginning of the football season. The Panthers of Lake Providence have braved these first few days on the practice field as they prepare for the 2009 season. Lake Providence went 4-7 in 2008 and made the playoffs for the first time since 1984. They accomplished this playoff berth under the direction of first-year head coach Sonny Nason.

Nason, in his second year is preparing the Panthers for a very strong district 2-2A. The Panthers return some key starters on offense including sophomore quarterback Lamar Carraway, running backs David Alston and Erik Edwards and offensive linemen, Aljeylahn Collins and David Young, who will move from the tackle position to center. The receiving crew will be very young with only one senior and one sophomore wide out getting much playing time last year.

On defensive side of the ball the Panthers will miss senior defensive lineman Kevin Gilmore. He will be replaced by his big little brother Rod. Also joining the Panther the defensive front will be Jaylan Whiteside who played center last year. Coming back from last year on the line will be Extrail Brown, Mitchell Martin and Demetis Williams. The linebacker crew remains intact inside with Greg Bell and Robert Atkins, while Tyiris Adams will have duties on the outside. The secondary returns cornerbacks Zach King and Jeremy Lyons while adding Fonjayrean Steward at safety.
The Panthers will put the pads on for the first time today. I'm sure they are excited to truly get the season underway. We will to keep you up-to-date on the progress of the Panthers throughout the season.

Feel free to comment or give shout-outs to the kids this fall.

The offense looks a whole lot better this year so far. Last year the defense dominated on the practice field.
